Site setup

Posted by JRV on April 23, 2008

Learning to set up a website has been somewhat complicated to listen to over the years, it seemed to involve a lot of computer knowledge and administrators to hire and whatnot. But, today I realized that you can’t really learn something well until you’ve taken the plunge, and now I’ve finally decided to take the risk. Past blogs have always dealt with information and news, so I’ve decided to take that approach to this new website, so I wish to make a website about Latin American news, art and culture for the interest of Latinos in the SF Bay Area. I might broaden the scope of it in the future, but for now that will do. The first step was to register the domain, I chose Jack Rabbit Velocity based on my initials and thought it was stupid catchy… I wanted to do my best to not do business with godaddy.com since I’ve heard plenty of horror stories about them and as a result I’ve registered the domain name of the main site with DreamHost, $10 for the whole year. Their hosting plans look awesome, but I wanted start off the site with something not to big, and decided to go with Laughing Squid. In retrospect, It might have been cheaper to go with DreamHost with the hosting, but after looking at the FAQ and Support pages in the Laughing Squid website I decided to try them out for a while and if the website grows, maybe move the hosting elsewhere, a big plus for me was that they are also local.

I decided that the website would take a blog format since I’ve seen that sort of format catch my eye for the last couple of years. I sort of want to do what Newsvine does for regular news and sort of mimic it for news on Latin America and Latinos in the Bay Area, and possibly include other aspects to the site.

After realizing that setting up a website like this was not as easy as setting up a blog on Blogger or the regular WordPress, I decided not to give up and after a couple of days of reading and re-reading various setup tutorials, I present to you Jack Rabbit Velocity Version 0.1 beta!!!

Version 0.1

HAHAHA! I like retro stuff, but this is certainly one of those times retro isn’t good. and so that’s where the site is this week, hopefully by next week there will be some design changes and some actual content to discuss.

Until next time!
